Restoring My Own Sanity

I was not able to make it to Jon Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, but thanks to wonderful technology, Bryan and I were able to watch it (without commercials) on Comedy Central. While it would have been fun to join our friends in attendance, I quite enjoyed watching from my couch in my pajamas with access to my bathroom. Nevertheless, I was struck by the message comedian Jon Stewart had to offer. His voice of reason and the sincere speech at the end of the rally was what I was waiting for.

There are terrorists and racists and Stalinists and theocrats, but those are titles that must be earned. You must have the resume. Not being able to distinguish between real racists and tea partiers, or real bigots and Juan Williams or Rick Sanchez is an insult, not only to those people, but to the racists themselves, who have put in the exhausting effort it takes to hate — just as the inability to distinguish terrorists from Muslims makes us less safe, not more.

Most Americans don’t live their lives solely as Republicans or Democrats, but as people who are just a little bit late for something they have to do, often something they do not want to do. But they do it.

This message had the most impact on me. We as Americans have forgotten that we are a country of individuals. Individuals who think similarly to groups but have their own minds, their own reasons and their own actions. Because the terrorist who hit the World Trade Center was a Muslim doesn't mean all Muslims are terrorists. It's just bad logic.

A fallacy of composition arises when we infer that something is true of the whole from the fact that it is true of some part of the whole. For example: (A) Atoms are not visible to the naked eye. (B) Humans are made up of atoms. (C)Therefore, humans are not visible to the naked eye.

Racism isn't really an issue that I have, but I do have the same logical fallacy when it comes to religious groups. I've become quite jaded from example after example after example after example of Christians behaving stupidly. It's not fair for me to judge all Christians for the actions of some. But, that is exactly what I've been doing. I see the horrible things that groups of Christians do, and I've become angered and allowed my anger to cloud my judgment. I am guilty of what racists are guilty of, what tea partiers are guilty of. I am guilty of generalizing, of amplifying stupid issues and of harboring anger.

But this stops today.

Today, I have restored my own sanity.

We're the greatest, strongest country in the world. Thank God.

My Cradle List

My favorite website The Frisky mentioned the idea of a Cradle List, a list of things you'd like to do before you have a baby. I love lists, and I love waiting to have a baby, so I knew I needed to share mine.

My Cradle List
Travel Italy to try wines, see Roman history and eat authentic Italian food
Be ready to give up a bedroom
Go crazy in Vegas
Have a sweet place
Buy a brand new safe car fit for a family
Set some money aside for the baby's gear
Stop feeling the need to sleep in or stay up late with friends
Read a book about babies

That's about it. A lot of those seem like they'll happen at one time. A lot of my friends with babies love their kids, but they are disappointed with the lack of freedom, lack of money and lack of grownup "fun." More reason to believe that my IUD was a great decision. No Buckley babies for awhile, y'all. There's too much Buckley fun to be had.

This Bird Whips it Back and Forth

I can't stop listening to Willow Smith's new Whip My Hair hit. This cockatoo loves it, too! The whole thing is worth watching.

Much Needed Vacation

Life in Oklahoma has been tougher than life in Philadelphia, mostly because we are still adjusting to our new culture and the small town. Thankfully, working at a university gives us lovely perks like front parking spaces, special dining rooms and the same breaks as students. Both Bryan and I are enjoying a lovely fall break, today and tomorrow off. I have used my vacation time to have Monday though Thursday off, too, making it a whole week off. Hooray! And now a list.

List of Things to do on my Fall Vacation
Eat lunch in pajames
Go shopping in Tulsa
Do lots of laundry
Catch up on my television
Bake some chocolate chip cookies
Sleep in everyday
Make our Halloween costumes
Pick up my parents from the airport and show them around Tahlequah
Eat Oklahoma barbeque
Learn to use our smoker
Gamble with my parents
Make the poster for NSU Improv's first show
Cook all the fabulous recipes I haven't had the time to make

Homemade Pesto

Most days of the week, I make my lunch. The things I can make during my lunch hour AND get a nap are limited. So, I eat a lot of deli sandwiches. Sandwiches are great because they are healthy and cheap.

Bring some pizzaz back to your sandwich with this homemade pesto. It is so freaking good I wanted sandwiches for dinner, too!

Homemade Pesto
Great as a sandwich spread or mixed in with pasta.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan-Reggiano or Romano cheese
  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/3 cup pine nuts or walnuts
  • 3 medium sized garlic cloves, minced
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Combine everything in a food processor. Spread onto bread and toast.

I halved the recipe and had plenty! I am so excited to eat my sandwich later today.

Where the winds come sweeping down the plain!

I'm still living in Oklahoma.
There is a mouse in my house.
Yesterday, I made a book display of scary stories, zombie books and witchcraft readers.
I cook six out of seven (pretty delicious) dinners a week.
Bryan and I are learning the Viennese waltz.
My DVR can't seem to record It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Improv is blossoming at NSU.
My parents are visiting in two weeks.
I'm in love with Bryan's iPad.
Our neighbor's husband passed away.
I have still successfully avoided buying a goat.
