2012 Review

As a tradition, the first sentence of my first post from each month: my year in review.

2011 was quite a hot mess.

How far along: 13 weeks. I made it to the second trimester!

My grandmother is adorable.

My husband is back from Chicago where he presented his new paper (success!), and I enjoyed a lovely weekend to myself.

Can I be honest for a second, ladies?

How Big is Baby: cucumber, 15.5-16.5 inches, 2.5 to 3.5 pounds

Geez. I have had a DAY.

Life is on two to four hour intervals now.

Life is a blur right now.

Bath time has become fun.

My jcrew ballet flats were delivered on Monday, but they never came to my house.

Bradley is on cold #2 out of 7.

2012

In this year, I have:
Travelled to china
Brought more international students to NSU than in NSU history
Had my first son
Enjoyed eight weeks of cuddles known as maternity leave
Hired a nanny and left my cute baby while I returned to work
Negotiated my first real promotion
Gained 40 pounds
Lost 35 pounds
Was named Best Comedy Duo with Bryan
Minimalized my kitchen, living room and closet
Took a picture a day for the entire year
Went to Disney world with my new three person family
Got the new iPhone 5
Learned how to cook a steak, cut vegetables correctly and enjoy salted butter on bread
Found my favorite red wine: Dancing Bull

It's been a good year. A really good year, actually.

My year was basically two halves, a year defined by the birth of our first kid. The first half of the year, I was pregnant and full of anticipation. The second half, we found ourselves as parents and navigated through parenthood, our new life and keeping our marriage still fun, sweet and low-stress.

I'd say that, for all the craziness of having a baby, we did incredibly well. We laughed, we cried, we took too many pictures, we slept a lot, we didn't sleep much at all, we traveled, we holed up and ignored the world, we gained and we lost weight. And we emerged happy. Solid.

Our even years have always been the good years: 2006 (started dating), 2008 (dsi and wedding), 2010 (N Crowd and tour of friends on east coast), And now 2012 (Bradley and best duo).

While I expect next year to be tough, I will hold out for hope: for another good year.

Happy new year!

Merry Christmas

This year has been weird.

Nothing has been as I expected but somehow it worked.

I'm in my pajamas on Christmas morning with my sweet husband, my fat baby, my tired parents, my hilarious sisters and my new brother in law.

We are about to eat moms freshly baked, warm from the oven muffins and start out christmas traditions.

Merry Christmas!

An attempt at catching up:improv

So much has happened.

This past weekend, we took Bradley with us to Oklahoma City for the comedy festivus weekend. He slept the whole way in the car, and we even stopped to see Santa Claus at the mall. Of course, the moment Bradley smiled, Santa coughed. Thanks, old man.

We taught a workshop, and I had Bradley in the moby for most of it. It was surreal to give notes with a baby giggling right on my belly. It reminded me of being pregnant.

Everyone was happy to see us, and it was wonderful to not be pregnant. The bartender had my red wine ready! We hung out backstage before the show, and Bradley was so popular. He thought he was so cool hanging out with all the performers. And believe me, he was.

8pm came and the first group went to perform. We were headlining, so we had another hour before our set began. I started nursing Bradley (if I hear ONE MORE GODDAMN JOKE about breastfeeding and how someone can "get in on it" or "where's the line?" I'm gonna slap a bitch) and got him ready for bed. We set him down in the pack-n-play, had a lady improviser ready to snag him if he cried and started warm ups. Which nowadays consist of us going, "Do you think we'll still be funny?" and "What suggestion do you want to get?"

After intermission, we stood behind the curtain and just danced. It was just like old times, and I don't think either of us remembered that we had a baby sleeping backstage. Bryan's challenge was to initiate the crap out of the show, and mine was to vary distances between characters. And then we heard, "RED LETTERS!" and we ran out.

We joked about being parents and got a non-baby related suggestion and did the show. It was my favorite show we've ever done. It was incredible. Laughs followed by applause. What? Are you sure we're not just boring old parents whose only joke is going "blubufhajsghdf" to Bradley. So much fun.

After the show, we made out talked about the show in a corner and I've never felt more in love with Bryan than when we're basking in our own comedy afterglow. Instantly, our marriage was better. We were so happy, so happy to have done a good show, so happy to still be funny, so h appy to do something together that we both love so much.

We finally made it backstage to see our baby was still sleeping. I grabbed the little dude and walked into the theatre so we could get seats for the next show. He slept through the first act, then woke for the second (I went backstage to nurse) and then he LOVED watching. It was incredible. He stood on my legs just staring at the performers. I looked to my right, saw my hilarious husband and on my lap was my future hilarious son. And probably, for the first time since Bradley was born, I felt like my life was complete, in that moment, it was everything I'd imagined - and better.

Also: we have been named Oklahoma's Best Comedy Duo.

an attempt at catching up: work

So much has happened.

My boss, the Executive Director, has resigned. I can't share too many details except that it happened and I feel more comfortable in the workplace.

On the same note, I've been assigned all his duties in his absence.

So I had my first serious adult negotiation. All I could think as he was considering my offer was, Geez, I need a manicure.

My new coworker is awesome, and we get along really well.

As far as students, so far this semester I've had to:
-retrain four new students
-tell one student he couldn't graduate
-help a group of students with a meal/housing solution to fit their religion
-help another student with her bill due to economic hardship
-promote one student to intern
-get a graduate assistantship for the office
-explain the situation regarding my boss as politically correctly as possible with the least details
-help students with visas for their Caribbean cruise
-listen to a student say that his test was so hard that he wanted to die
-explain what macaroni and cheese is at the holidy party

Needless to say, I'm exhausted. And so ready for break. Even though my break will be full of visiting as much family as possible.

Lord, please give me peace. I freaking need it.

My fat and happy baby

It takes a village.

My office has been a pit stop for everyone on campus. All the nosy have come by. All the ones wanting to let me know they're there if I need anything. While this is all wonderful and interesting, I can't share any information with anyone. And I have a million items on my to do list - and it's tough to complete anything when people pop by and go, "So tell me what's going on..."

I had miniature breakdown to my nanny about everything on my plate, and she went grocery shopping for me. I could have cried again. I just hugged her and thanked her for five minutes.

And today, she stopped by with her boyfriend to deliver dinner to us. Thursdays are crazy because we only have 5-5:45 together before Bryan has to run for his night class. What a godsend. I hugged and thanked her again.

There's just no way we could get through life without friends or family. And I'm gonna have to adopt our nanny and her boyfriend into our family.

Craziness

This week has been crazy. I think I might say that too often.

This is probably the craziest time in my life: raising a baby, working full time, coaching an improv team, keeping house, planning the holiday vacation with both sides of the family, and you know, trying to stay in touch with friends. I blink and a month goes by.

In the last seven days, I have:
-taken my baby to see Wreck It Ralph in theaters (he loved it)
-met with the Provost four times
-cried in front of our nanny
-accepted food and chocolate from our nanny (bless her)
-had a very sick baby and dealt with all that (without missing work)
-had lunch with an old friend
-hired three new student workers
-ran two improv practices
-threw away six boxes of old promo material
-wrote a letter to China
-learned about the religion Jainism
-finished Christmas shopping for Bryan

I woke up thinking it was Friday. Alas, I as wrong.

At least I've got a super cute baby.

Sick baby

Bradley is on cold #2 out of 7.

This one is rough. Stuffy nose, high fever, phelmy cough and really sad crying.

It's tough to watch him be in pain.

He doesn't understand that the more he cries, the more his throat will hurt.

All that works is Tylenol, cuddles, nursing and being in just a diaper.

Poor guy.
